Description

VEX Robotics Central High School Program

All students are natural scientists and engineers. They love to question, tinker, experiment and play. VEX competitions foster these skills and capitalize on the motivational effects of competitions and robotics to help all students create an identity as a STEM learner. VEX competitions are also a great way to expose students to valuable soft skills like communication, collaboration and time-management in a fun and authentic way. The VEX Robotics competition prepares students to become future innovators with 95% of participants reporting an increased interest in STEM subject areas and pursuing STEM-related careers. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels and culminate at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April!

The VEX V5 Robotics Competition equips students with a diverse set of skills that span technical, soft, project management, and personal development areas. Here's a detailed look at the skills students typically learn:

Technical Skills

  1. Mechanical Engineering: Designing and building robots, understanding mechanical principles, and using tools and machinery.
  2. Electrical Engineering: Basic wiring, understanding circuits, and working with electronics specific to the VEX V5 system.
  3. Programming: Writing and debugging code for robot control, often using VEXcode, RobotC, or other programming environments compatible with VEX.
  4. CAD Design: Utilizing Computer-Aided Design software to create and simulate robot parts and assemblies.
  5. Sensor Integration: Using sensors (e.g., gyros, encoders, ultrasonic) to enhance robot functionality and performance.

Soft Skills

  1. Teamwork: Collaborating with team members to design, build, and compete with robots.
  2. Communication: Effectively sharing ideas and strategies within the team and presenting them to judges and other teams.
  3. Problem-Solving: Analyzing challenges and developing innovative solutions within the constraints of the competition.
  4. Leadership: Taking initiative, managing team roles, and leading projects.
