Description

This summer handwriting boot camp will improve the quality of students entering Kindergarten through 3rd grades. Students will learn appropriate pencil grasp, optimal seating position, and correct letter formation. A wide range of activities will be used to promote fine motor control and hand and finger strengthening. 

Activities will include:

·        daily writing tasks

·        daily finger and hand stretching

·        modeling with Play-Doh

·        cutting

·        using tweezers/clips to transfer small objects

·        hand mazes

·        using hole punchers

·        building with small objects

·        Participation in Little Adventures Water Day activities

As students’ progress through these daily activities, their fine motor strength should improve. As students improve fine motor strength, the quality of their handwriting should naturally improve. Research has indicated a significant positive correlation between academic success in reading and writing and quality of handwriting. Students that struggle with activities will be encouraged to try other activities and to work daily to improve their abilities to complete each activity.

In an effort to build leadership skills, students will be responsible for tracking their own progress. Students will assist the teacher with daily set up and clean-up of all materials. During the last week of camp, students will create weekly schedules that can be duplicated at home. These schedules will allow students to continue to build their hand and finger strength before returning to school in August.
