The Career Pathways Program offers early career exploration and opportunities for youth and young adults interested in healthcare. Participants will gain hands-on experience and attend weekly professional development sessions.


Program Placements:

  1. WIC Somerville (1 placement)


  1. WIC is a nutrition program offering healthy foods, nutrition education, and healthcare referrals to Massachusetts families. Tasks include:
  • Update resources for referral lists
  • Explain WIC foods and the WIC app to clients
  • Assist with education during FM season
  • Help with anthropometric measures for Head Start children
  • Participate in WIC material development meetings (if scheduled)


  1. Outpatient Pharmacy - Cambridge Hospital (experience required)
  2. Provide pharmacy services in a retail and specialty setting. Tasks include:
  • Fill and type prescription orders
  • Answer phone calls


  1. Radiology - Everett & Cambridge Hospitals (2-3 placements)
  2. Work with X-ray, MRI, CT, and Ultrasound departments. Tasks include:
  • Reception and assisting with patient transport
  • Adhere to safety protocols (e.g., room entry restrictions)


  1. Specialized Sexual Health Clinic - Cambridge Hospital (Tuesdays 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM)
  2. CHA provides coordinated HIV care and prevention. Tasks include:
  • Attend meetings on patient care
  • Assist with medical case management and database management
  • Support food pantry services


  1. Information Desk - Cambridge Hospital (Mon-Fri 8 AM - 12 PM)
  2. Serve as a welcoming resource for patients, visitors, and staff. Tasks include:
  • Welcome and provide information to visitors
  • Hand out surgical masks
  • Help patients with disabilities
  • Manage phone inquiries and parking validations


  1. Interpreter Services and Translation Services - Malden (Mon-Fri 9 AM - 5 PM)
  2. Assist with a variety of language services. Tasks include:
  • Help with special projects
  • File, scan documents, and assist with additional tasks


  1. Somerville Endoscopy Unit (7 AM - 3 PM, flexible hours)
  2. Support endoscopy procedures. Tasks include:
  • Assist with patient transport
  • Check vital signs
  • Shadow professionals


  1. Career Pathway Fellow (General Tasks)
  2. Participants will work across departments based on their goals and interests. Tasks may include:
  • Promoting local resources
  • Filing documentation
  • Educating patients on routine vaccinations
  • Conduct outreach (e.g., farmers markets, social media)
  • Introduce mental health resources
  • Job shadowing


Program Requirements & Expectations:

  • Hours: 15-20 hours per week, depending on the site.
  • Weekly Meetings: Includes training sessions, certifications (e.g., QPR, Public Speaking), guest speakers, and team-building activities.


Eligibility:

  • Minimum age: 16
  • Must complete occupational health clearance (vaccinations, background checks).
  • Ability to lift at least 20 lbs. and perform physical tasks.
  • Masking and fit testing may be required based on site policies.
