Description

Job Description
Routine watering is a critical component to tree survival within the first few years after planting. Trees that go on to survive and thrive will provide human health and ecosystem service benefits to a community for generations. Students will provide water to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) newly planted public trees in Everett. Most of the watering will be conducted in the Everett Housing Authority Russell Street neighborhood but could be expanded to include other locations. Students are encouraged, but not required, to learn more about the trees they are watering and their impact on the environment through dialogue with the DCR forester and by reporting their observations.
Tasks
- Carry and connect 15 pound, 100-foot-long hoses to outdoor spigots
- Water each tree on the list one time per week by filling their irrigation bags
- Coil and stow away hoses neatly
- Record and report daily tree watering total to the DCR forester
Responsibilities
- Communicate any task difficulties with the DCR forester and/or the youth jobs program coordinator
- Follow the watering techniques demonstrated by the DCR forester
- Report damaged or missing irrigation bags to the DCR forester
- Troubleshoot irrigation bags that are not draining, as shown by the DCR forester
- Report tree damage or hazardous debris in the tree pit to the DCR forester
- Report absence or tardiness to the youth jobs program coordinator and the DCR forester as soon as possible
- Keep a friendly disposition toward residents and be mindful of others in the space
Additional Thoughts
- Tree watering lists should be finalized after consultation with the students and the program on start time, location, and their ability to get around the city.
- Students will navigate hilly lawns, uneven surfaces, and some paved walkways.
- Students are highly advised to begin their tree watering work in the morning between 7am and 8am when temperatures are cooler.
- Students should be prepared to work in summer weather. A large, reusable water bottle with access to a nearby, air-conditioned, fill-up location is essential. Hat, sunscreen, and a comfortable pair of sneakers or boots are recommended.
- Students should wear clothes they don’t mind getting wet or dirty.
