Key Responsibilities:
Document Translation:
- Translate printed or digital documents, brochures, and forms from English to another language (and vice versa), under supervision.
- Assist in translating materials related to city services, programs, and important public notices.
- Help ensure that all translated documents are accurate and culturally appropriate.
Interpretation Support:
- Assist City Hall staff during meetings or events by providing basic verbal interpretation services (such as helping non-English-speaking residents during public hearings or appointments).
- Support the translation of phone calls, emails, or online chats when needed, ensuring that clear communication is maintained.
Assisting with Multilingual Services:
- Help ensure that multilingual resources (like posters, websites, and social media posts) are up to date and accessible.
- Assist in maintaining a list of available translation resources and external language support services.
Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness:
- Ensure that translations are not only linguistically accurate but also culturally sensitive and respectful.
- Work with City Hall staff to understand the needs of the multilingual community and help improve communication strategies.
Customer Service and Community Support:
- Assist residents who come to City Hall with translation-related needs, such as helping them fill out forms or understand policies in their native language.
- Help answer general inquiries about translation services or available language resources.
Team Collaboration:
- Work alongside the communications or community outreach team to support multilingual public information campaigns.
- Collaborate with other interns or staff members to improve accessibility and language services for the community.
Data Entry and Organization:
- Help organize and file translated documents or materials.
- Maintain records of translation requests and completed projects to ensure a smooth workflow.
Qualifications:
- Age: 16 years old.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in at least one language other than English (Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, etc.) is required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and the second language.
- Attention to detail, especially in ensuring translation accuracy.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to work under guidance.
