Solicitor Intern – City Hall


Job Summary:

As a Solicitor Intern at City Hall, you will assist the legal team with their day-to-day tasks and projects, helping to provide legal support for the local government’s operations. This internship will allow you to gain exposure to municipal law, public policy, and the legal framework that governs local government decisions and services.


Key Responsibilities:


Legal Research and Documentation:

  • Assist in researching case law, legislation, and regulations related to local government affairs, including zoning laws, public policy, and contract law.
  • Help summarize legal documents, opinions, and reports for the legal team.
  • Draft or assist in drafting basic legal documents like letters, memos, and agreements under supervision.

Attending Meetings and Briefings:

  • Observe and attend meetings with legal teams, city officials, or public hearings to understand the legal processes involved in city governance.
  • Take notes and prepare summaries or minutes from meetings.

Support in Case Preparation:

  • Help prepare case files or documents for court proceedings, hearings, or internal legal processes.
  • Assist in organizing and managing evidence, files, and legal records.

Client Interaction and Correspondence:

  • Help prepare correspondence for internal stakeholders or the public, under supervision.
  • Participate in preparing responses to legal inquiries or requests from other government departments, businesses, or citizens.

Administrative and Organizational Support:

  • Assist with organizing legal files and documents, ensuring proper filing and record-keeping systems.
  • Help with general administrative duties like scheduling meetings or managing calendars for the legal team.

Shadowing and Learning:

  • Learn about the specific areas of law relevant to local government, such as municipal law, housing law, public contracts, and public services.
  • Shadow experienced solicitors and legal staff to gain insight into how legal advice is provided and how legal processes work in the public sector.

Contribute to Special Projects:

  • Participate in ad-hoc legal projects, such as reviewing local ordinances or contributing to initiatives aimed at improving legal compliance within the city government.
  • Research and help prepare reports on legal matters affecting the local community.

Qualifications:

  • Age: 18 years old.


  • Skills:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in legal research and municipal law.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or legal research databases.


Duration:

  • Typically 6–8 weeks, depending on the specific City Hall or department.


Location:

  • In-office at the City Hall (or hybrid/remote if applicable).
