Description

Health and Homework is after-school enrichment program designed to support the academic success and overall well-being of elementary students at Deerfield Beach Elementary School. The program provides a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where students receive one hour of structured homework assistance followed by one hour of interactive health and wellness education.

During the academic support hour, students receive individualized homework help, guidance with assignments, and opportunities to strengthen foundational reading, writing, and math skills. Staff encourage positive study habits, organization, and confidence in learning while helping students meet their academic goals.

The health and wellness time introduces students to healthy lifestyle practices through hands-on, age-appropriate activities. Lessons include nutrition education, healthy cooking experiences, social-emotional learning, and wellness support that promotes self-awareness, emotional regulation, healthy relationships, and positive decision-making. Students learn practical skills they can apply at home and in school, helping them develop lifelong habits that contribute to both academic achievement and personal well-being.

By integrating academic support with health education, the Health and Homework program empowers students to succeed in the classroom while fostering the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to lead healthy, balanced lives.

Physical Activity

Physical Activity is an integral component of the Health and Homework and is provided daily to promote lifelong healthy habits through structured, engaging movement experiences. Students participate in a variety of age-appropriate activities that develop fundamental motor skills, cardiovascular fitness, strength, coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Programming includes evidence-based curricula such as Soccer for Success, CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health), and general physical conditioning activities designed to keep students active while building confidence and resilience. Through fun games, skill-building exercises, and cooperative play, students increase their daily physical activity, improve overall fitness, and learn the importance of regular exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity also reinforces positive social skills, goal setting, perseverance, and respect for others, supporting students' physical, emotional, and academic success.

PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) is an evidence-based social-emotional learning program integrated into the Health and Homework program. Designed to help children build essential life skills, PATHS teaches students how to recognize and manage emotions, develop self-control, solve problems effectively, build healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Through engaging lessons, interactive discussions, fun youth games, and physical activities, students practice positive communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, empathy, and emotional regulation in a supportive and encouraging environment. The program reinforces skills that contribute to improved classroom behavior, stronger peer relationships, increased self-confidence, and greater academic success.

Participation in PATHS complements the Health and Homework program by providing students with the social, emotional, and behavioral skills needed to thrive both in school and in everyday life. By integrating social-emotional learning with academic support, nutrition education, and physical activity, the program helps students develop the knowledge, resilience, and confidence needed for lifelong success.
