JOUNCE High is a FREE after school program offered to all high school age youth in Haywood County. Now in its fourth semester, Jounce High is offered four days a week with transportation options included.
Starting now for Fall 2025, on September 8th:
Mondays: Dorito Garden
2 Sessions, 2:30-3;30, 3:30-5:00
(HCC Willow Building and Junaluska Community Garden)
A new program designed around combining skills-based organic gardening with hands-on food science and tech education. Students will make their own nacho cheese doritos from ingredients they grow in the Junaluska garden! Supporting projects include: worm composting, fermentation experiments, cheesemaking and building a solar-powered irrigation system.
Tuesdays: Repair Shop
2 Sessions, 2:30-3;30, 3:30-5:00
(HCC Willow Building)
Supported by WNC Repair Cafe Volunteers, Students will gain hands-on introductory experience with a wide variety of common household repair skills. Students will learn skills that enable them to save money, become more independent and live more sustainably. Projects for fall 2025 include: building a lamp, introductory welding, household plumbing repair, sewing machine work, drywall and basic furniture repairs.

Students will participate in small-group cooking sessions, with a unique focus on using fresh ingredients grown by students at the Junaluska Community Garden

Led by a retired HCC expert horticulturist, students will participate in all steps of cultivating nursery plants. From seed selection to sale, students will learn what it takes to care for a wide range of nursery plants.
