Family School Skills (FSS) is an eight week program for parents/caregivers to attend with their child twice a week (Tuesdays and Wednesday) to learn how to positively increase their child’s social emotional development and literacy skills through child directed play and reading together. Throughout the eight weeks, parents/caregivers are also taught about the seven “Executive Functions (EF)” (focus and self control, perspective taking, communication, making connections, critical thinking, taking on challenges and self engaged and directed play) based off of , Ellen Galinky’s book, Mind in the Making.
Each week the parent/child will participate in various discussions, crafts, activities, and movement exercises that connect to the executive function of the week. For example, when discussing the topic “Communication,” parents will learn how communication skills are crucial to their child’s learning and language development. Parents will learn various techniques like using eye contact when speaking to their child, kneeling down to their child’s level when communicating, and also using fun crafts like making puppets to use during play interactions. The FSS program has another component which is giving all attending families one book each Wednesday. The book is related to the weekly child life skill topic in order for parents to both engage and develop in critical literacy anchor behaviors and cultivate these life skills in their child’s everyday life. By the end of the eight weeks families will have a collection of seven books for their private home library. Lastly all attending families will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the eight weeks.
