Artist Ways

Artist Ways is a 4 week project starting the week of Oct 21st through November 17th.

Each week during the next four weeks, we will be introduced to a historical or contemporary artist and their work. Students will learn about Lois Mailou Jones and African masks and explore those ideas with flare pens and color blocking. We will discuss Mark Bradford and explore his work ideas using sandpaper and paint to create intentional textures, lines, and shapes in our layered work. We will discuss Mickalene Thomas's work and explore their art ideas using expressive colors and flare pens and then we will add intentional collage, color, and ephemera (rhinestones, feathers, fishnet, glitter). Lastly we will learn about Lorna Simpson and explore her art ideas through water color, collage and mixed media. Each artist's themes and material usage will be emulated as we work with new techniques and methods to express our identities, tell stories, and express ourselves.
