Course Description:

In this course, dancers will travel through time to discover some of the most iconic dances of the past century. One day we may relive the spooky theatrics of Michael Jackson's Thriller; another day we'll strike a pose and learn the sharp, expressive lines of Vogue; and another day we'll stay right here at home to study Anacostia's own "Beat Ya Feet." Through these experiences, dancers will explore styles that celebrate identity, honor cultural roots, and reveal how dance has shaped generations of dancers before them.

Anacostia Creates Connection:

Students will practice Go-Go Dance and learn how this high-energy style took root and grew into a beloved cultural movement in Anacostia and throughout Washington, DC. They will focus specifically on "Beat Ya Feet," a dance style nurtured right here in Southeast, tracing its roots and understanding how it became a powerful expression of community pride and identity. Along the way, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the ways dance connects them not just to a rhythm, but to the history and spirit of their own neighborhood.

Meet Your Teaching Artist:

Ms. Ault is a lifelong artist with a deep passion for dance and the performing arts. She attended a prestigious performing arts school from kindergarten through 12th grade, where she developed her skills and love for creative expression. As a performer, she has worked with programs such as the Alvin Ailey Extension and has graced stages including the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

At 14 years old, she founded a summer camp to bring the arts to her community, teaching dance to more than 100 students. Classically trained in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, West African, Flamenco, and Circus Arts, Ms. Ault continues to expand her repertoire by exploring dance styles such as Swing, Salsa, and Bachata.

She is passionate about sharing her love for the arts with individuals from all walks of life, believing that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of artistic expression, just as she has throughout her journey.
