Class Description
For this special Family Art Day, teaching artist Lea Winston from the Hirshhorn Art School will lead a collaborative art-making adventure inspired by the exhibition Basquiat x Banksy.
Together we’ll look at two powerful artworks currently on view at the Hirshhorn: Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump (1982) and Banksy’s response to it, Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search (2018). Artists sometimes “riff off” each other’s ideas—responding, remixing, and building on what came before—and that’s exactly what Banksy did with Basquiat’s work.
After learning a little about these two influential street artists and the stories behind their art, families will create their own “riff” artworks. Using materials like paint sticks, stencils, collage, charcoal, and bold mark-making, participants will experiment with layering images, symbols, and words—just like street artists do.
Everyone will leave with a unique piece of art inspired by Basquiat, Banksy, and their own imagination.
