Description

Description: Celebrate the magic of summer through the art of lantern-making! Inspired by light traditions from around the world, families will create colorful paper lanterns and luminaries using tissue paper, tracing paper, collage materials, pressed flowers, and other decorative elements. Along the way, participants will reflect on the lights that brighten their lives—from stars and campfires to birthday candles, fireworks, and family celebrations. This joyful, hands-on workshop encourages creativity, imagination, and connection while giving participants the opportunity to design a glowing lantern that carries their own memories, wishes, and summer spirit.
Facilitator: Lo Yu (Saoirse) Chou
Saoirse is a first-year graduate student at George Washington University pursuing her Master’s degree in Art Therapy. Originally from Taiwan, she earned both her BA and MA in Journalism from the National Defense University, where she built a strong foundation in observation, analysis, and communication. She began her career in the military, providing psychological support and guidance to service members in high-pressure environments. These experiences heightened her awareness of the importance of non-verbal healing and inspired her path toward art therapy.
Saoirse believes deeply in the power of art therapy to support trauma recovery, strengthen resilience, and foster emotional expression and community connection. Beyond her studies, she has volunteered with Taiwan Lifeline to offer emotional support, assisted children in art-making workshops, participated in art therapy trainings, and taken part in community art exhibitions and activities.
Outside of her academic and professional pursuits, Saoirse enjoys exploring many forms of art, including collage, acrylic painting, and ceramics. She also finds balance through meditation, writing, and spending time in nature, and she looks forward to continuing her growth and contributions during her internship with Project Create.
