Have you ever admired the rich blue of Japanese indigo cloth and wondered how its distinctive color and patterns were created?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore indigo dyeing and shibori, the Japanese art of shaping and securing fabric before dyeing it. Through folding, binding, clamping, blocking, and simple stitched-resist techniques, artisans prevent dye from reaching selected areas of the cloth. When the fabric is opened, these resist areas reveal striking geometric and organic patterns, including diamonds, hexagons, lines, and floral forms.

Participants will learn about the history and cultural traditions associated with indigo and shibori, examine the plants and prepared pigments used to produce indigo dye, and observe the preparation and care of an indigo vat. Each participant will design, prepare, and dye an original textile piece.

About the Instructor

Trisha Gupta is an artist, master printer, educator, and founder of Indie Fabric. Her practice specializes in Indian woodblock printing and Western printmaking techniques, with an emphasis on heritage processes, sustainable materials, natural dyes, and accessible arts education. She has taught workshops through museums, schools, studios, and community arts organizations, helping participants connect traditional textile practices with contemporary design and personal expression.
