Course Description:

As part of Anacostia Creates: Claiming Anacostia's Inheritance Through Art, students will learn the fundamentals of screen printing while exploring how artists use printmaking to share ideas, celebrate culture, and build community. Inspired by Anacostia's rich history, public art, music, and neighborhood pride, students will transform their original drawings into wearable works of art.

By creating custom T-shirts, tote bags, posters, or fabric banners, students will discover how art can move beyond gallery walls and become part of everyday life. They will also learn how screen printing has long been used by artists, activists, and community organizations to communicate powerful messages and inspire social change.

Anacostia Creates Connection:

By the conclusion of the program, students will have developed artistic skills, strengthened their understanding of Anacostia's cultural heritage, and gained confidence in using art as a tool for storytelling, civic engagement, and community pride. Their completed murals, screen-printed apparel, maps, artist statements, and mixed-media artworks will be showcased in a public exhibition, allowing families and community members to celebrate the creativity and voices of Anacostia's next generation of artists.

Meet Your Teaching Artist: Brit Scott (Britnee Scott) is a contemporary folk and graffiti artist from Washington, D.C., whose vibrant mixed-media works explore themes of resilience, identity, healing, and collective memory. Raised in Southeast Washington, D.C., Scott discovered her passion for art at the age of seven, inspired by visits to the city's museums, libraries, and cultural institutions with her family. These early experiences sparked a lifelong commitment to using art as a vehicle for storytelling, social reflection, and community engagement.

Today, Brit Scott continues to expand her artistic practice through exhibitions, public art commissions, educational programming, and collaborative community projects. Guided by the belief that art has the power to inspire, heal, and unite, she remains dedicated to creating work that honors lived experiences while encouraging others to imagine a more compassionate and vibrant world.
