The Light It Up School of Arts Drum Class is an engaging, hands-on music program designed to help students discover their musical voice while building confidence, discipline, creativity, and teamwork. Through YUPP ORG’s Light It Up School of Arts program, students in Santa Clara have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of drumming in a positive, supportive, and encouraging environment.

Students are introduced to the basic techniques of playing drums and percussion instruments, including proper hand positioning, rhythm patterns, timing, coordination, counting, and reading basic rhythmic notation. As students progress, they learn how to combine individual drum patterns to create complete beats and understand how their instrument works together with other musicians.

The class is designed for students with different levels of musical experience. Beginners receive a strong foundation and plenty of opportunities for hands-on practice, while students with previous experience are encouraged to develop more advanced skills, improve their timing and technique, and explore their own musical style.

Beyond learning how to play an instrument, the Drum Class emphasizes important life skills. Students learn patience through practice, responsibility through caring for their instruments, focus through rhythm exercises, and teamwork through group performances and musical collaboration. Students are encouraged to listen to one another, follow direction, communicate effectively, and support their classmates.

A major component of the program is performance preparation. Students have opportunities to practice songs and rhythmic arrangements that may be incorporated into YUPP ORG performances, showcases, community events, and other program activities. Performing allows students to experience the excitement of sharing their talents while developing confidence and overcoming stage anxiety.

The program also creates space for creativity. Students are encouraged to experiment with rhythms, develop original beats, participate in improvisation exercises, and express themselves through music. Instructors help students understand that music is not only about technical ability but also about expression, connection, and telling a story through sound.

Through the Light It Up School of Arts Drum Class, YUPP ORG seeks to give young people more than music lessons. The goal is to provide a safe and inspiring environment where students can build their talents, discover new interests, develop leadership skills, and recognize their own potential.
