About

Community Youth Advance (CYA) harnesses the power of community and transforms out-of-school time to Teach, Reach and Keep youth on the path to success. At Judge Sylvania Woods Elementary, we offer our Newton's Thinkers program, which is funded by the Maryland State Department of Education under the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program. Newton's Thinkers is a robust program that provides academic support, experiential learning, and fun extracurricular opportunities. All students will also have the opportunity to participate in our character education & mentoring programs.


What is the Newton's Thinkers After-school Program?

CYA's Newton's Thinkers provides K-5th grade students with homework support, personal and small group tutoring, fun-filled experiential learning field trips, project based learning, extra curricula venture experiences, character education, service learning, mentoring, and more.

What does a typical week in Newton's Thinkers look like?

  • Four days per week, students meet in-person with a tutor to complete homework and to review core content skills. Each tutoring session is 60 - 90 minutes with a highly qualified, certified instructor.
  • One - two days per week, students participate in an extracurricular venture courses of their choice (art, dance, culinary arts, STEM, etc.) Each venture session is 60 minutes led by an industry professional.
  • One - two times per month, students participate in Saturday mentoring programs and service learning projects.
  • One - two times per quarter, students participate in fun-filled experiential learning field trips. Many of these experiences are to various locations within the surrounding community.
