About
George Washington Carver Montessori School 87 is one of three public Montessori schools in Indianapolis Public Schools. Our school uses the Montessori method as its instructional method. The Montessori method is an individualized, child-centered approach to learning developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician. The Montessori method is characterized by an emphasis on self-directed activity on the part of the child and observation on the part of the teacher. Montessori is a highly hands-on approach to learning. It encourages children to develop their observation skills by doing many types of activities. These activities include use of the five senses, kinetic movement, spatial refinement, small/large motor skill coordination, and concrete knowledge that leads to later abstraction. It stresses the importance of adapting the child’s learning environment to his or her developmental level, and the role of physical activity in absorbing abstract concepts and practical skills.
The Montessori classrooms have a variety of specially designed educational materials which the children use to learn mathematics, language arts, science, geography, and history. Montessori classrooms provide an atmosphere that is pleasant and attractive to allow children to learn at their own pace and interact with others in a natural and peaceful environment. Children are grouped in multi-age classrooms where the teacher serves as a guide, encouraging exploration and self-discovery. Students work independently, but also learn respect, cooperation, and sharing through group activities. Parent participation is an integral part of the student’s success in the Montessori program.
