Listen to Our Future is a grassroots organization founded in June 2020, inspired by social justice movements and motivated by the effects of COVID-19 on the education system for students in under-resourced communities. Our founders, Lillian Barkes and Brandon Street created a BIPOC-led 501(c)(3) organization to educate youth and allow them to be change-makers in their community. Our programs include afterschool K-6th grade tutoring, intervention and MTSS support, and project-based learning workshops. Our mission is to equip and empower youth to make long-lasting changes in their community through education, empowerment, and social action.

For tutoring, Listen to Our Future utilizes researched-based curricula to meet students' individual needs. Our reading curriculum helps boost students' comprehension, while our phonics curriculum is used in schools across the country and has been approved by the IDOE as a dyslexia intervention. Our math curriculum is aligned to Indiana State Standards and focuses on mastery. Each student is given a baseline assessment to allow staff to understand the gaps students may have. From there we are able to directly intervene and tailor our instruction so students are able to maximize their learning time.

Our tutors establish healthy relationships with students while helping them achieve academic success. At least 85% or more of students said they liked tutoring, they liked their tutor, agreed tutoring helped them in reading, tutoring made them excited, and that it helped them feel good about learning. The increase in students' academic achievement, dispositions towards learning, and healthy relationships with tutors demonstrate their desire to remain in tutoring and excel academically.
