Course Description:
Creative Inheritance: Mixed Media Stories of Anacostia is a community-centered visual arts course that invites students to explore, document, and celebrate the stories, places, and people that shape Southeast Washington, DC. Rooted in the rich artistic traditions of Anacostia and Wards 7 and 8, this course encourages students to look inward at their own neighborhoods and discover the creativity, resilience, and cultural histories that surround them every day.
Through mixed media art-making, students will investigate themes of identity, belonging, legacy, and community pride. Inspired by local landmarks, neighborhood spaces, family histories, and the work of DC artists, students will combine photography, collage, painting, drawing, text, and found materials to create original works that reflect their personal and collective experiences.
Anacostia Creates Connection: Creative Inheritance: Mixed Media Stories of Anacostia explores the Anacostia Creates theme by inviting students to investigate, celebrate, and document the creative history and living culture of their own community.
Meet Your Teaching Artist:
Kendall Robinson is a Washington, DC–based professional portrait artist and international muralist. She earned her B.F.A. in Painting from Howard University and is currently enrolled in the M.F.A. program at Howard University. She is a proud member of Alpha Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
In 2020, Kendall was selected for the inaugural Beats by Dre HBCU Black Futures Program. She is a published children’s book illustrator whose work explores creativity, culture, and social themes. In 2024, she was selected for the Comcast Xfinity HBCU Campus Tour, during which her paintings traveled nationwide to more than 13 HBCU and HSI campuses. In 2025, her work was showcased at Art Basel Miami Beach via Soul Basel.
Kendall has been commissioned by Warner Music Group, including a reimagining of Curtis Mayfield’s There’s No Place Like America Today, featured in over 30 Black-owned record stores during Black History Month. As a #ConverseAllStar, she has partnered with Universal Pictures, Amazon Studios, and Monkeypaw Productions on socially impactful projects. Her Jazz Appreciation Month mural is permanently housed in the National Museum of African American Music, and in 2024 she completed two government-commissioned murals in Santander, Spain.
Through her studio practice and youth summer art camps, Kendall is committed to inspiring people of all ages to pursue their creative passions despite all odds.
