The Sloane Stephens Foundation is proud to offer free year-round swim lessons exclusively for students enrolled in Compton Unified School District. Lessons take place at the brand-new Compton High School pool and are led by certified instructors who specialize in helping children build water safety skills, confidence, and a love of swimming.

What to Expect:
SWIMMING SKILL LEVELS
BEGINNER –
Level 1: Water Acclimation & Movement
• New to swimming or not yet comfortable putting face in the water.
• Learning basic water safety skills: breath control, floating on front and back, and simple arm/leg movements.
• Can begin to glide short distances with support.
• Outcome: Able to jump into the pool, surface, and swim up to 25 yards using the swim–float–swim technique.
INTERMEDIATE –
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
• Comfortable in the water, can put face in.
• Can float on front and back without help for a few seconds.
• Can glide and swim short distances using basic strokes.
• Outcome: Builds stamina, confidence, and readiness for independent swimming across the pool.
ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE –
Level 3: Stroke Mechanics & Development
• Can swim 5–10 yards on front and back without stopping.
• Comfortable with rhythmic breathing while swimming.
• Beginning to learn freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
• Developing diving techniques and treading water for 15 seconds or more.
• Outcome: Able to dive into the pool, swim multiple laps using multiple strokes, tread water for a minute or more, and be conditioned for organized aquatic sports or lifeguard training.
ADVANCED –
Level 4: Stroke Improvement
• Can swim 25 yards using freestyle and backstroke with proper breathing.
• Demonstrates beginning breaststroke and butterfly skills.
• Can tread water for 1–2 minutes and perform surface dives.
• Outcome: Able to swim 50 yards continuously, showing improved efficiency, technique, and endurance across all major strokes.
