Jump In - At No Cost to You!
The Sloane Stephens Foundation is proud to offer free, year-round swim lessons for students enrolled in Compton Unified School District (CUSD). Lessons take place at the Compton High School pool and are led by certified instructors who help children build water safety skills, confidence, and strong swimming fundamentals.
Who Can Participate?
Current CUSD students are eligible to participate in this free program.
Proof of current CUSD enrollment is required. Acceptable documentation may include:
- Current school ID
- Report card/progress report
- Student Data Printout
- Screenshot from an official CUSD student/parent portal showing the student’s name and school.
Select a schedule that works best for you:
1. Monday and Wednesday (or)
2. Tuesday and Thursday (or)
3. Friday and Saturday
Each schedule includes two lesson days per week. Consistent attendance on both days gives students the best opportunity to build skills, gain confidence, and make steady progress.
What We Offer
• 100% free swim lessons - no registration fees or hidden costs.
• Six-week lesson series, with opportunities to advance to the next skill level.

• Small-group classes for more personalized attention.
• Year-round weekend lessons, with weekday sessions offered during the summer.
• All swim equipment provided. Families only need to bring a swimsuit and towel.

Why Swimming?
Swimming helps children develop water safety skills, physical strength, confidence, coordination, and endurance while having fun and staying active. Our goal is to help every swimmer become safer and more comfortable in the water while building skills they can carry forward.
What to Expect
• Skill tracking and regular updates so families can follow their child's progress.
• Instruction matched to each student's current swimming ability.
• A supportive program built for Compton students and families.
Swimming Skill Levels
BEGINNER - Level 1: Water Acclimation & Safety
• For students who are new to swimming or still becoming comfortable putting their face in the water.
• Focuses on basic water safety, breath control, floating on the front and back, and simple arm and leg movements.
• Students begin gliding short distances with support.
• Goal: comfortably enter the pool, surface, and begin swimming short distances using basic swim-float-swim techniques.
INTERMEDIATE - Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
• For students who are comfortable in the water and can put their face in.
• Students practice floating independently and gliding or swimming short distances using basic strokes.
• Focuses on building confidence, stamina, and readiness for independent swimming across the pool.
ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE - Level 3: Stroke Development
• For students who can swim approximately 5-10 yards on the front and back without stopping.
• Introduces and develops freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
• Includes rhythmic breathing, diving techniques, and treading water.
• Goal: swim multiple laps using more than one stroke and build endurance for organized aquatic activities.
ADVANCED - Level 4: Stroke Improvement
• For students who can swim approximately 25 yards using freestyle and backstroke with basic breathing control.
• Develops breaststroke and butterfly skills, improves stroke technique and efficiency, and strengthens endurance.
• Goal: swim 50 yards continuously with improving technique across the major strokes.
Have children at different skill levels? Please contact us. When space and scheduling allow, we will work to place siblings in back-to-back lesson times.
