About

United Way of Central Indiana's mission is to support programs and build systems that accelerate financial stability and upward mobility, especially for households facing multiple challenges at once.

To measurably reduce the number of financially unstable households, United Way is focused on the top

predictors of poverty:

  • Basic Needs - to provide essential services to our neighbors in need
  • Early Care & Learning - to increase literacy and learning success for children
  • Economic Mobility - to increase earnings and build employment pathways
  • Safe & Affordable Housing - to increase housing security and reduce homelessness

ReadUP is United Way of Central Indiana’s signature early care and learning literacy initiative. It connects

trained volunteers with local elementary schools, where they provide one‑on‑one tutoring to two

third‑grade students for one hour each week—30 minutes with each child—using expert‑developed,

evidence‑based literacy practices and resources.

Through consistent support and encouragement, theprogram helps students get on track, and stay on track, with grade‑level literacy.

By focusing on third‑grade literacy proficiency, ReadUP helps prepare students for long‑term academic

success and positive economic outcomes.
